Chips down for Potato Head show

Article Abstract:

GMTV has withdrawn its plans to acquire from Film Roman, a US producer, the 13 x 30-minute series pres-school program, "The Mr. Potato Head Show," for fear that the show's title is a violation of UK's TV merchandising and licensing rules. A spokesman for GMTV said the broadcaster may not be able to air the show because its name is based on a product. An Independent Television Commission ruling states that a program that is funded by a product manufacturer or licensee would be regarded as having an unacceptable promotional purpose. The show, which Film Roman produced in association with Hasbro, a US toy manufacturer, was premiered on Fox Networks in the US on Sep. 12, 1998.
