Comedy is no laughing matter

Article Abstract:

The commissioning of comedy television programmes in the UK is often handled in a way which gives little opportunity for aspiring young writers to prove their talent. Situation comedies are almost always commissioned in runs of six, an approach which can bring excellent results but which can also limit opportunities for young writers and producers. A better approach may be to set up writing teams for comedy television programmes, drawing on successful experiences of using this approach for comedy radio programmes.
