Communication and health: 41st Annual conference of the ICA, 23-27 May, 1991, Chicago

Article Abstract:

The conference focused on several topics, which included the media's coverage of the Gulf War and Desert Storm, politics and the economy, the need for cultural studies, media methodologies, and social identity and social action. A panel on 'Postmodernism and Communication Research' analyzed the politics of postmodernism and the effects of affluence and social class. Media omissions and media emphases were also discussed, along with censorship and the manner in which the media covers war and affects people's perceptions. Overall, the conference was very well organized.

Empire and communication: The media wars of Marshall McLuhan

Article Abstract:

Marshall McLuhan was reproached for his utopian view of media technologies as the 'extensions of man' and for his failure to understand the new, rhetorical powers of the electric mass media, which were evident from his first reflections on advertising as a 'magical institution' in 1952 to his last writings on 'The Brain and Media' in 1998. Three modulations of his most infamous aphorisms were examined such as 'the medium is the message', 'the medium is the massage', and 'the medium is the mass-age'.

Telling stories: the epistemological value of anecdotes in Ghanaian communication research

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the epistemological significance of storytelling as a means to understand the nature of communication are examined, focusing on a study of several anecdotes that reveal how the speaker relates to the environment. Topics include the use of anecdotal evidence in forming media policies regarding the environment.
