Cultural imperialism and resistance in media theory and literary theory

Article Abstract:

The media has been used both as a force of resistance against cultural imperialism and as tools of cultural imperialism and modern theorists believe cultural imperialism is present in media and literature worldwide. Images such as fast food, t.v. shows, and popular celebrities can be found everywhere and serve to promote commercial agendas. Through the same medium, writers and theorists work to promote active audience resistance. Brazilian television acts a resisting force successfully promoting Brazilian soap-operas over Western shows and many works of literature call for non-standard social positions on a variety of issues.

Journalism's 'discursive events' and sociopolitical change in Sweden 1925-87

Article Abstract:

Journalism acts as a form of institutionalized social communication. An analysis of Sweden's news media between 1925 and 1987 finds that the media legitimizes social institutions as well as reinforces them. Early 20th century media did not actively separate facts and opinion and offered a less organized medium for a variety of voices. Post World War II news media reflected social and economic changes from the public's point of view. Swedish journalism in 1987 depicted events over agents or actors and reflected an awareness of its own role in shaping society and political action.

Drugs and the media in the era of postmodernity: an archeological analysis

Article Abstract:

Media representations of drug consumption and its surrounding culture in the UK can be explored using Michel Foucault's archeological method of study. Though the media's treatment of drug-related news supplies a criminalizing imperative, there also exists four distinct media statements on drugs and related issues. Using Foucault's approach the statements concern descriptions of drug use and its societal relationship, specifics concerning drug consumption, descriptions of drug containment measures, and human interest pieces or stories concerning the underground drug culture.
