Speed over substance

Article Abstract:

News reportage on the Congress has been made easier with the introduction of the latest broadcasting technology on Capitol Hill. The broadcasters' gallery was remodelled to produce well equipped working booths for every correspondent. Politicians have become more media smart with the introduction of network cameras. However, the sense of community that reporters shared previously has been taken away by the isolated working booths. Print journalists are rarely present at their gallery in the house, preferring to depend on C-SPAN for information.

Big picture and local angle

Article Abstract:

Journalism on Capitol Hill applies modern communications technology in a traditional setting, with guidance by political protocol. Initially, membership to the Congressional press gallery was granted only to the reporters of daily newspapers. Television coverage of the Congress has contributed much towards educating the public about politics. The 'Congress Daily' has changed the way news moves on Capitol Hill. Capitol Hill is also facing an invasion by electronic journalism, which has accelerated the transmission of information.

Behind the noise on the floor

Article Abstract:

Greater coverage is being given by the press to the interaction of the Congress with other branches of government than to its legislative functions. While story coverage previously involved describing only the debates on the floor, such coverage now calls for an in-depth analysis of these debates. The 1994 Republican victory has changed the approach to news coverage. The major exchanges between the President and the legislative branch are now making big news.
