Article Abstract:

The challenges posed by digital technology will be a key issue under discussion at the European Audiovisual Conference in Birmingham, England, in Apr 1998. It will consider the future of broadcasting in a business environment in which digitization will end scarcity of spectrum, and will look at how digitization ends the division of the broadcasting market into national units. Particular issues to be discussed will include whether the audiovisual industries will expand as a source of employment and whether intervention is justified to support job creation.
