Eight year license terms

Article Abstract:

Eight year license renewal terms are available for radio and TV stations who apply, under a change in FCC rules. The FCC's decision is based on the Telecom Act provisions extending terms to eight years for all types of stations. Radio stations who have recently received seven year renewals will receive an automatic extension year under the revised policy. Translators, low power TV stations, and international broadcast stations are also eligible to receive the eight year terms.

Streamlining broadcast application and licensing process

Article Abstract:

The FCC's broadcast license application process is under review. The Commission is considering ways to reduce the amount of paperwork, filing requirements, and to generally streamline the entire process by eliminating unnecessary rules and mandating electronic filing. Changes in rules concerning unbuilt stations, construction permit extensions, and related issues are also being considered.

New renewal procedures

Article Abstract:

The FCC process for station license renewals has been changed into a two-step process, beginning in May 1995. Although competing license applications are no longer accepted, a renewal application can still be denied for failure to meet standards. A Petition to Deny challenge can also be filed, although the criteria for accepting these petitions has been made more stringent.
