Emergency alert system

Article Abstract:

The FCC has decided to replace the Emergency Broadcasting System (EBS) with an updated emergency alert system (EAS) because the EBS uses outdated equipment that is difficult to maintain and operate. The EAS uses an encoder and therefore does not require station personnel to operate; can activate car radios, radios, CD players, TVs and pagers; and can accommodate different language requirements. Current participation is voluntary but all broadcasters must upgrade by Jul 1, 1996 at a cost of between $600 and $2,500.

Public file allocation

Article Abstract:

The 1988 revision of the public file rulehas required all broadcasters to keep their public files within the confines ofthe city which issued their licenses. The sole exception are for radio stationswhose main studios were already situated beyond city bounds before Jul 16, 1987. For radio stations located outside the city of license, the FCC has suggested that the documents be filed within the city at a place accessible to the public.
