From cultural defence to political culture: media, politics and collective identity in the European Union

Article Abstract:

The European Union's (EU) media and cultural policies have shifted to reflect fears concerning cultural identity and the audiovisual media's role in shaping that identity. The rapid political, economical, and social changes in Europe have led to questions of nationalism and fears of Americanization of culture in the world market. The EU should understand the importance of the media in influencing political and cultural policy and incorporate media-related issues in their agenda.

Islam, postmodernity and the media: an interview with Akbar S. Ahmed

Article Abstract:

Akbar S. Ahmed feels that the postmodern spirit of Western societies will foster a reconciliation with Islam. Islamic identities are changing in modern times, and Muslims should make a rapprochement with the West. Western media consist of tribal mentalities similar to any human group, as Ahmed's work with the British Broadcasting Corp showed to him.
