Gimme five!!

Article Abstract:

Dawn Airey is the Director of Programmes for Channel 5 Broadcasting (C5), a new terrestrial television station in the United Kingdom, which is due to be launched on Mar 30th 1997. Airey and her six editors have tried to use the yearly programming fund of 110 million pounds sterling to bring some new concepts to broadcasting in the UK. Executives from C5 hope to gain a 5% share of the UK television audience. Airey has had to restrict the budget of some programs and has not invested in areas such as documentaries. Some observers suggest that Airey has chosen only populist programs.

Switching on

Article Abstract:

The widening gap between television executives who believe that digital broadcasting will take over from terrestrial television was shown at the 1997 RTS convention. Some believe that the future is interactive with viewers choosing what they watch and when, rather than depending on television schedules. The predicted number of internet connections was 900 million by 2004, with no major advertising campaign. It was pointed out that only 25% of UK homes receive multi-channel TV and free programming would remain the greatest market for the time being.

Harries game

Article Abstract:

Andy Harries has been controller of entertainment and comedy for Granada Television since 1994. He is an enthusiastic proponent of alternative comedy and new entertainment shows, although his support for fringe talent conflicts with the more middle-of-the-road culture of ITV's Network Centre, which will only buy shows featuring well-known comedians. He gives as an example the Centre's rejection of comedian Steve Coogan who now appears on the BBC.
