Going for gold

Article Abstract:

Pearson TV Chairman Greg Dyke has increased the capacity of programming production and gained a foothold in the US market by purchasing All American Communications. Pearson paid $373 million for All American, with the acquisition complimenting other purchases such as Grundy and Thames TV. One of Pearson's strategies is to convert successful UK shows to US format, at the same time keeping All American's Movie of the Week slot which is highly successful. Game shows are a speciality of All American and well known ones such as The Price is Right and Play Your Cards Right are all now owned by Pearson.

A fresh start?

Article Abstract:

UK television broadcaster Independent Television (ITV) has been criticised by the Independent Television Commission (ITC) for not commissioning enough quality programmes from independent producers. ITV programme director David Liddiment has launched a new initiative to increase the quality and quantity of independent programmes for May-December 1998. UK television regulations stipulate 25% of programming output must be independently produced, although Liddiment believes this figure is too high.
