Hollywood under scrutiny; after the boom years of the mid-nineties for the Hollywood studios' international TV arms, European broadcasters may be more cautious in the next round of deals

Article Abstract:

As the millennium approaches, Hollywood studios, including Columbia TriStar, Paramount, Warner Bros., Universal, Disney Buena Vista, 20th Century Fox, and MGM, are attempting to renew or replace many of the European deals they made in the mid-nineties, but they may not have much from which to choose. Although there is a greater variety of channels, buyers are probably not as apt to spend as their predecessors were. Increasing local production in many territories has led to fewer slots for U.S. programming, and consolidation seems to be favoring buyers of U.S. programming.
