Hyde Park on television

Article Abstract:

Speakers Corner, is a facility provided by Canadian private television company Citytelevision based in Ontario, Toronto that consists of a small kiosk fitted with a video camera focused on a seat. The kiosk is available 24 hours daily to anyone who wants to express their views on camera for two minutes for a donation of $1 Canadian. Proceeds from the kiosk are donated to a children's charity. Speakers Corner has proved to be a successful television version of a newspaper 'Letters to the Editor' column.

What price fairness?

Article Abstract:

A recent case involving the UK Independent Television Commission (ITC) and TV station MED-TV illustrates the uniqueness of British fair broadcasting concepts. MED-TV distributes programs to Kurds around the world and has been accused by Turkey as a media arm of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). The ITC fined MED-TV $144,000 for airing a rally of the PKK without supplying balancing material and for allegedly supporting terrorist organizations.

A tyranny of images

Article Abstract:

Independence of the press for the new republics of the former Soviet Union has come to mean freedom both from government control and cultural domination of Moscow. Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Estonia and Azerbaijan seek to escape from the influence of Russian television by establishing their own cultural identities through national programming. Ukraine reached a compromise with Moscow with respect to television programming and billing policies.
