Knocking on Evans door

Article Abstract:

An extra 60 hours of Welsh-language programmes will be broadcast by Welsh television channel S4C when it begins to transmit on digital terrestrial television (DTT) in July 1998. Independent Welsh-language programme makers are concerned that S4C's budget will not be increased and that they will subsequently be expected to make programmes on lower budgets. Consumers will gain from extra choice, with educational, nature and live entertainment channels being considered.

All telling the same tales: as the Sheffield International Documentary Festival kicks off this weekend, TV's flagship strands stand accused of following an identi-kit format

Article Abstract:

Many of terrestrial TV's flagship documentary strands could be accused of copying formats and C4 commissioning editor for documentaries Peter Moore, admits there is an eclipse of styles and subjects. He believes that the fate of the UK documentary rests in the hands of the editors, and sees a need to maintain distinctiveness. Programmes such as BBC 1's Inside Edge, BBC2's Modern Times, ITV's Network First and Channel 4's Cutting Edge are compared.

Marriage of convenience

Article Abstract:

A new production from BBC TV Documentaries is making the best use of the new multiskilling, digital technology techniques. The six-part series Relate, to be shown on BBC2 in early summer 1997, tells the story of six couples undergoing marriage counselling. The low-cost series is being filmed using a lightweight Panasonic DVCPro camera and the use of multiskilling means that just two people are involved in the filming.
