LE vision set

Article Abstract:

Producers of light entertainment television programmes in the UK should ensure that their programmes are clearly targeted at a particular slot, according to Claudia Rosencrantz, controller of network entertainment at ITV. She reports a lack of good ideas for light entertainment programmes, while Kevin Lygo, head of independent commissioning at BBC Broadcast, reports that he receives many suggestions for shows. However, most of these are aimed at BBC2, rather than BBC1. Finding and developing talent is the priority for Graham Smith, commissioning editor for entertainment at Channel 4.

Arts and minds

Article Abstract:

The recent move by Channel 4 to end the contract of Waldemar Januszczak, controller of arts and music, highlights the problems which are now facing this television station. His departure will give Channel 4 the opportunity to undertake a structural reassessment, according to Stuart Cosgrove, controller of arts and entertainment, with whom Januszczak is believed to have clashed. Observers feel that the channel is currently undergoing a serious identity crisis, and that it may now totally reorganise its editorial structure.

From papers to producers

Article Abstract:

A number of newspaper groups have turned to television and radio interests over recent years to improve their financial position. They believe that there are particularly good prospects in programme production, as they will be able to operate both as a supplier and an owner of programming. However, some observers are sceptical about whether a journalistic approach to television programme production will be successful.
