Living legend

Article Abstract:

Lis Howell, General Manager of satellite women's channel UK Living since August 1997, has also been in charge of Challenge TV, TCC, Trouble and Bravo. All the channels come under the ownership of Flextech, either wholly or via joint ventures. Flextech in partnership with BBC is to launch the first pay-per-view packages called UK TV. Howell's drive and enthusiasm has helped UK Living push up its viewing figures to 1.17% of the multi-channel market, a yearly rise of 21.3%. She is keen on home-produced shows and plans a 30 minute daily mens show on the Bravo channel in early January 1998.

A busy body

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom Broadcasting Standards Commission (BSC) Chairman Lady Elspeth Howe admits she does not have a wide experience in television broadcasting but she points out many of her fellow commissioners are very knowledgable about the industry. Some industry experts suggest the BSC is not very useful to the industry and many of their rulings are unpredictable. Lady Howe suggests in 30% of cases the broadcasters agree with the complaints about their programs. She is very supportive of the BSC continuing in its work and welcomes the BSC's code of conduct for broadcasting.

Privacy rules?

Article Abstract:

Investigative journalists in the UK working on television programmes such as World in Action fear their work could be hampered by the introduction of a privacy and fairness code. The code has been produced in association with the industry and welcomed by many. Also looking into the matter of privacy is the Independent Television Commission (ITC). Eventually it is envisaged by the UK Labour government that both broadcasting and telecommunications will be regulated by one body, Ofcom, making previous codes redundant.
