Major advisor probes BBC's press machine

Article Abstract:

BBC's press and publicity division is under the scrutiny of Howell James, a former advisor to Prime Minister John Major. James, the head of corporate affairs at the BBC before he joined Major's advisory group, has been asked to conduct an examination of the impact of the broadcasting company's PR activities in radio, television, education and the country's different regions. The request for the study, expected to be finalized in the autumn of 1998, was made by Sue Farr, BBC Broadcast director of marketing and communication.

Article Abstract:

UK radio station Talk Radio is the subject of a take over bid by News International, owned by media tycoon Rupert Murdoch. The UK radio industry is preparing to see how the appointment of former Sun newspaper editor Kelvin MacKenzie by Murdoch will affect the output of Talk Radio. MacKenzie has been accused of lowering standards within the UK newspaper and television industries. News International owns satellite broadcast station BSkyB which has the rights to broadcast many of the UK's most popular sports events.

Bland hits back at ITV 'mischief-making.'

Article Abstract:

BBC Chairman Sir Christopher Bland has issued a counterattack against ITV's statements which accuses the former neglects its public service duties because of competition in ratings. According to Bland, the statements made by ITV were self-serving and a simple act of mischief to steal the limelight from BBC, which published its new-look annual report in Jul. 15, 1998. Bland also told ITV chiefs to mind their own business and to pull their own act together.
