Lessons from Kosovo: bad things happen when the media and the military butt heads yet again

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the troubled relationship between the military and the press during NATO's military operations in Kosovo in 1999 are examined. Topics include the way in which the military managed the news, limited journalistic access, the dangers posed to news reliability and military personnel in an age of instant communication, and the personality differences in people drawn to the military and to the press.

The journalistic history and standards of the US military newspaper "The Stars and Stripes" are examined. Topics include the military community the newspaper serves, the number of civilians on its editorial staff, its commitment to the First Amendment, limitations imposed by the Department of Defense, and a "Stripes" editor who resigned in protest over Pentagon restrictions.
