Megamedia moguls and multimedia madness

Article Abstract:

Several writers have addressed the question of the role of media mergers and multimedia. Benjamin Barber contrasts religious fundamentalism with the world of videos and computers. 'Road Warriors' by Daniel Burstein and David Kline concerns the media's power, which has even invaded the legal system. Television and motion picture mergers may be more successful according to Kevin Maney in 'Megamedia Shakeout.' Financing of international media networks, the influence of advertising and the common-carrier concept in the postal and telegraphic system are the other themes discussed.

Representative Lee H. Hamilton has raised concerns about several trends in journalism which have eroded public confidence in news media. These include journalists' biases against public officials which influence their reporting, lack of coverage of national issues and absence of balanced reporting. He believes that journalists must learn to balance skepticism with respect for the public and political process.
