Mr Turnaround

Article Abstract:

The HTV Group has been successful in improving its operation and has recorded an operating profit of some 12,6 million pounds sterling for 1996 from a half-year loss of 4.8 million pounds sterling in 1991. Chris Rowlands, HTV Chief Executive, has restructured the company organisation and intends to introduce new technologies to maintain profitability. Rowlands is also planning to oppose the cost of HTV's license which he suggests should be reduced by 15 million pounds sterling. Rowlands is looking forward to several joint ventures with other television companies and US studios.

Cracking the US

Article Abstract:

Television stations in the UK often find that their programs do not succeed with US television networks which purchase only 30 series annually out of a 100 pilot shows made in the UK. The ABC television network has requested that Granada TV produces 13 episodes of the Cracker television program for an American audience. Granada's management hope that if they are successful with the Cracker series they will receive more commissions from US networks. Some British companies have invested in US production companies in order to make programs which would be more popular in the US.

Refreshing ITV

Article Abstract:

ITV's Network Centre is set to enter a new era following the appointment of David Liddiment as director of programmes. ITV shareholder companies welcome the fact that Liddiment has experience in programming and scheduling, but some observers have expressed reservations about his personnel and public relations management abilities. Both Liddiment and ITV Chief Executive Richard Eyre are determined to reverse the decline in the company's share of television viewing.
