News chiefs clash over questions of judgement

Article Abstract:

A session at the 2007 Edinburgh Television Festival had news editors John Ryley and Craig Oliver in an exercise, facing a real time scenario and deciding whether or not to broadcast events as they happen. Ryley said he would air live footage of a hostage situation, which angered BBC's Petter Horrocks and Commons committee chair John Whittingdale. Jeremy Paxman's views related to this event are also given.
