Quantel's Monaco on the starting grid

Article Abstract:

Sony plans to create a new high-end editing and effects system codenamed Monaco, which will compete with Smoke of Discreet Logic and Editbox of Quantel. The new system is being jointly developed with Intergraph Computer Systems in line with a long-standing partnership that was revealed at the 1997 Siggraph computer graphics exhibition. The system is believed to be built around Sony' Farad video-server and could manage both uncompressed and MPEG-2 video. Sony is also believed to be developing its own software based from an existing wire removal and paint technology, for Monaco.

Quantel axes jobs as downturn bites

Article Abstract:

Quantel attempts to offset a decline in global sales in the company's editing, effects and service-based products by laying off almost 40 employees. The UK-based editing and effects manufacturer will cut 18 jobs, primarily in the customer support and service departments, while the company's US division will eliminate 16 other jobs in similar functions. The worldwide downturn in sales is attributed to impact of a healthy pound, the economic crisis in the Asian region and doubt about US plans for high-definition television.
