Riding the digital revolution

Article Abstract:

UK broadcasters, such as the BBC and BSkyB, are enthusiastic about the advent of digital television, with its promise of revolutionary programming and cost savings, but industry observes warn that it could simply result in lower-quality programs. Many independents and broadcasters are turning to the new techniques, combining new technology with multiskilling to ease production costs, but others are unenthusiastic about using the new approach. It is generally agreed that multiskilling is not applicable to all productions and the key to success is to know when it is appropriate.

Winter of content

Article Abstract:

Many of the UK's television studios are experiencing an upsurge in demand following a lax period during summer 1996. TV producers are fighting for studio facilities, with increasing high-volume demand from new Channel 5, satellite and cable channels providing opportunities for established studios to lift prices. A key aspect of the market is price, with medium-sized studios costing from 3,000 pounds sterling/d to 14,000 pounds sterling/d.
