Russian reporters-between the hammer and an anvil

Article Abstract:

Russian journalists in the post-Soviet era feel entrapped between economic pressures from the market and political pressures from the state. The registration requirement for eligibility to government media subsidies has curtailed press freedoms. However, granting subsidies is seldom the priority of the local governments. In addition to the increase in violence against reporters, journalists are poorly paid as Russian print journalism is a nonprofitable business. The media also encounters authorities who interfere, bind media activities in legislation and refuse to part with information.

The weight of Watergate

Article Abstract:

The Watergate era can be considered as a high mark in public confidence in the press as a democratic institution in American politics. However, the trust that prevailed between the press and the government was destroyed because of the Vietnam and Watergate crisis. Journalists should work on getting back public trust to serve democracy effectively by reporting on issues the country needs to face.
