'Samizdat' goes public

Article Abstract:

'Gazeta Wyborcza,' the newspaper published from Warsaw is being transformed to face new challenges and dilemmas. The paper supported the Solidarity movement and its faith in state's sovereignty, democracy, human rights, national unity, religious freedom and rights of workers, reflecting the clash of hope, interests and values. Gazeta supported the implementation of Leszek Balcerowicz's economic reforms which ran against public expectations. The paper supported the restoration of sovereignty by communist countries. It made a blunder by entering into a political struggle.

Gazeta Wyborcza at 10: the progress of Poland since communism

Article Abstract:

Gazeta Wyborcza, launched in 1989, has always supported a united Poland. It did not wish to see aggressive nationalism replacing dominating communist ideology, as happened in other postcommunist countries, and for this reason has always opposed the ideology of ethnic exclusivity. It has supported new relations between states and nations in Central and Eastern Europe, and has participated in Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation. It has campaigned for democracy and human rights at the most basic level, and has supported community issues.
