Scorned in an era of triumphant democracy

Article Abstract:

The public holds journalists in low regard despite their efforts to adhere to objective reporting. One reason for this is a tendency to blame the messenger for delivering bad news. Another problem is related to the fact that the public's expectations of objectivity often turn out to be different from their desires. Journalists need to rise to the challenge of making important news stories interesting so that they attract as much attention as those stories based on entertainment or scandal.

The Hutchins Commission, half a century on

Article Abstract:

The press portrayed the Hutchins Commission on Freedom of the Press as a threat to free speech in the 1940s. However, it is argued that the commission never advocated government control of the press and even cautioned the government on applying antitrust laws to the press. This portrayal of the commission is believed to be an effort to shift attention from the group's main concern, namely, the control of the press by a few wealthy individuals.

Seething in silence - news in black and white

Article Abstract:

Black and white journalists should rise above racial prejudices to report news fearlessly instead of allowing their narrow racial boundaries to influence their writings. Journalists should look at facts in an objective and impartial manner that will benefit their status as conveyors of truth. News coverage is a highly volatile and delicate task and requires unquestionable integrity on the part of journalists while reporting.
