Scots tear off 'tartan TV' tag

Article Abstract:

Scottish TV (STV) has bought Caledonian Publishing in part to prevent being acquired itself as well as to improve 1995 pre-tax profits of 20.1 million pounds sterling. STV will enter the satellite and cable market by forming a joint venture company with BSkyB called Sky Scottish. The formations of Sky Scottish has led to a restructuring of management at STV and its production unit Scottish Television Enterprises (STE). Initial reports indicate that turnover at STE increased 69% in 1995 to 11 million pounds. Additional financial information on STV and British Broadcasting Corporation Scotland is included.

Matters of fact

Article Abstract:

The controller of factual programmes at Independent Television's (ITV's) Network Centre, Paul Corley, disputes ITV's reputed broadcasting of unintelligent programmes at peak viewing times. ITV broacasts more current affairs programmes at key points during the week than its main competitor, the British Broadcasting Corporation, says Corley. Corley believes that much of ITV's criticism comes from academic snobbery within the television industry.

Commercial break

Article Abstract:

TV3, Ireland's first fully commercial television channel, is due to be launched on Mar 17, 1997. However, there are still a number of obstacles to be overcome before it can be launched, including approval of its business plan by the Independent Radio and Television Commission (IRTC). It will also be necessary to create a UHF transmission network which will bring the channel to 85% of Irish people.
