Aiming for a junior high

Article Abstract:

UK children's television stations are facing up to the dual challenge of digital transmission and the every increasing number of US-produced programmes which are gaining a strong hold on children's viewing time. The Nursery Channel and Carlton Kids will be launched on On Digital's new service. Children's channels account for 8% of satellite and cable programming despite children making up 25% of viewers. US-based children's station Nickelodeon plan to launch a dedicated pre-school channel in the US which will have a strong educational flavour.

Taking kids to market

Article Abstract:

Finance and merchandising have become essential elements in the success of pre-school children's television programme making. A successful children's series needs to consist of at least 78 separate episodes before it will be shown in some markets, resulting in large amounts of financing being committed to a project with no guarantee of success. The most successful UK pre-school television programme of the late 1990s is Teletubbies, which has made up to 23 million pounds sterling for its makers Worldwide and Ragdoll Productions.
