Sky in bid for original print

Article Abstract:

Satellite and cable television broadcaster British Sky Broadcasting PLC, traditionally seen as an entertainment service, is planning to increase its investment in original production. Head of programming James Baker says that the broadcaster's maturity means it must begin creating its own programs, rather than buying-in material. BSkyB's overhauling of its Sky 1 channel is seen by one industry observer as a sign that it is serious about its commitment to entertainment and the 1997 original programming budget is set to total some 12 million pounds sterling, against just 6 million pounds sterling in 1996.

Primed for global exports

Article Abstract:

BBC Worldwide has become an international broadcaster rather than being just an international programmer. The 24-hour news channel BBC World will be launched on 1 February 1995 in the United States and in Continental Europe in late January 1995. The entertainment channel BBC Prime will also be launched in Europe in late Janaury 1995. The BBC aims to develop new channels via its global partnership with Pearson, while BBC Worldwide will drive the BBC's global expansion. The company aims to become a broad-based global broadcaster while gaining funds from commercial activities.
