Smith set to relax channel limits

Article Abstract:

Companies providing channels to a digital terrestrial (DTT) broadcaster could be prevented from breaking the laws by allowing more channels to be carried by one DTT broadcaster according to the proposal filed by Media Secretary Chris Smith. The existing 1996 Broadcasting Act allows only two out five channels or not more than 25% of all services to be carried by a single DTT broadcaster. The proposal is expected to be approved by the Independent Television Commission before all DTT services and digital services are launched, specifically before the launching of On Digital on November 15, 1998.
