Article Abstract:

British Broadcasting Corporation Ltd's (BBC's) documentary soap Hotel features the staff and guests of the Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool, UK. Lion Television, together with the BBC's Neil Grant, produced the series. Grant chose the Adelphi because it had a large number of employees to be filmed. The production team stayed in the hotel for six months, filming members of staff as they went about their work. The team invested much effort in building up relationships with hotel staff members. They produced 120 hours of film which they condensed into eight half-hour programmes.

Take a virtual reality check

Article Abstract:

Many special effects experts are looking at how to create extremely life-like computer-generated characters. However, observers believe that the necessary technology will not be available in the near future. Latest 3D systems are extremely expensive, and there are also other practical barriers to creating extremely realistic lead characters. Most significantly, it is very difficult to create computer-generated characters which use all the very subtle movements which characterize real human beings.

Software hits hard

Article Abstract:

Computer software companies are beginning to offer post-production packages for motion picture and TV animators. The leading software houses are developing a new generation of products that will allow the whole post-production process to be managed using a single, powerful-performance, off-the-shelf PC. Companies such as Discreet Logic and Microsoft-owned Softimage are already working towards such a solution.
