The production of news formats: determinants of mediated public contestation

Article Abstract:

Factors such as program costs, journalistic skills, new technologies and the news producers viewpoints affect the shape of television news formats. Professionals in the field believe that news formats do not offer a platform for public discussion of issues since these programs are subjected to commercial and political pressures. Study of the immediate environments and professional practices in which these determinants are involved is necessary to understand the influence of various factors on news formats.

Making ethnic minority programmes inside the BBC: professional pragmatics and cultural containment

Article Abstract:

Multicultural programming by British Broadcasting Corporation Ltd. is heavily influenced by professional pragmatics. Producers assign negative or positive responses to the programs, thus allowing them to avoid direct involvement in the politics surrounding race and representation. While this practice enables producers to act "professionally," it does little to enhance minority representation.
