The quiet news man

Article Abstract:

Richard Sambrook was appointed to head the BBC's newsgathering service in 1996, following a period as news editor of BBC News. He faces a new challenge after being given the responsibility of supplying radio's World Service news and servicing the planned 24 hour UK news channel and the BBC Online Internet service. The radical move to save costs by combining radio and TV news services was instigated by BBC director general John Birt. Former colleagues of Sambrook believe that his quiet and methodical approach will be an advantage when carrying out this difficult and sensitive task.

Just cause?

Article Abstract:

The BBC is currently campaigning for the introduction of the first real rise in the licence fee for more than 10 years. It believes that a strong BBC is vital to the health of the UK broadcasting industry as a whole. This view is shared by many in the industry, but not everyone is happy with the way in which the BBC is going about obtaining an increase. Some observers are even suggesting that the BBC should be privatised, as it should be able to survive in a competitive marketplace.
