Questioning authority, becoming authority: the life of Linus Pauling

Article Abstract:

Linus Pauling received two unshared Nobel prizes, one for chemistry and one for peace, illustrating his works as a scientist, and a political and social activist. Pauling's brilliance was evident even in his childhood. His scientific achievements were the quantum mechanical calculations of the characteristics of molecules. He also discovered the significance of weak forces in the function and structure of macromolecules. Pauling took interest in social and political policy, and publicly advocated democracy before World War II and disarmament policy.

A lesson in history, circa 2047

Article Abstract:

A fictional narrative describing the progression of the health care sector up to the year 2047 is presented. The narrative shows that the sector consumed some 14% of the GDP during the last part of the 20th century. It also points to cost containment as the prominent feature of health care reform and also the strong tool for the inclusion of external accountability for clinical facilities to supplement the tradition of intraprofessional accountability.
