Cut-price BBC budget

Article Abstract:

Recently announced BBC budget figures for 2002/2003 fall short of previously proposed numbers. Although programming and service spending will increase 24 per cent, 28 million pounds sterling will need to be saved by the end of 2001/2002, and that savings will come mostly from job cuts. A related table shows BBC funding plans in various categories.

BBC4, the digital culture channel after two years of its introduction attracts only 0.5% share in multichannel homes for the hours it broadcasts. BBC4 was given a 10m pounds budget to spend on drama, comedy and science to expand further.
