Article Abstract:

Developing projects in-house and passing them on to independent producers for completion has proved to be a very effective strategy, according to BBC Northern Ireland Head of Drama Robert Cooper. However, a mechanism has also been established for recognizing emerging writers who look set to establish a presence with innovative ideas. He believes that his team of 12 developed network drama and film projects budgeted at 25 million pounds sterling in 1997. This has been made possible through a radical change in his relationship with controllers Mark Thompson and Peter Salmon.

Why drama writers should choose the box

Article Abstract:

Television drama in the UK has a number of significant advantages over films. It has always aimed to break established boundaries and to challenge convention, and has always allowed individual writers to make their voice heard. The need to make a profit is not as overwhelming with television drama as with film, and writers therefore see less changes being made to their work. The film industry should be strong and vibrant, but should work with television drama, rather than taking writing talent away from it.

Traditional wake?

Article Abstract:

Irish television broadcasting has traditionally been dominated by programmes produced within Ireland itself. However, 80% of television viewers now have access to at least six channels, and some can now obtain up to 12 channels. This means that domestically-produced programmes are now facing much stronger competition. However, some observers claim that viewers still prefer these programmes.
