Article Abstract:

The UK Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) published a report on radio station takeovers in Jan 1998, after Capital Radio's proposed Virgin Radio takeover. The MMC report claimed the deal would have failed unless Capital excluded Virgin's London station from the purchase or it sold some of it assets. The deal collapsed after Virgin Radio was bought by disc jockey Chris Evans at the end of 1997. The radio industry regards the MMC report as a block to further expansion through merger or acquisition, leading to greater industry interest in digital audio broadcasting opportunities.
