Wall fall profits, wall fall losses: the media and German reunification

Article Abstract:

There was very strong interest in print media from the West immediately following the collapse of the Berlin Wall. East Germans had access to West German television before this point, but were now able to read uncensored magazines and newspapers for the first time. Furthermore, West Germans could become involved in the journalism of East Germany. The impact of these changes on journalism, politics and culture in a unified Germany continues to be felt. It is clear that it will take many years to balance out 50 years of ideological and cultural separation.

A free and flippant media

Article Abstract:

The American media enjoys freedoms not granted to Singaporean journalists. They can fearlessly report about government and express different viewpoints which are published in the same newspaper. No license is also required to publish a newspaper in the US. On the other hand, media in Singapore is controlled by the government. Journalists are not allowed to criticize the government since this constitutes a disrespect for authority.

Free speech and high standards

Article Abstract:

Major differences exist between freedom of the press in the US and Europe. Free press in America is exercised through violence on television and offensive comments on talk radio while in Europe, free press is balanced with respect for personal privacy and dignity. Nonetheless, American media can be controlled despite the absence of government regulation through the efforts of institutions such as news councils and ombudsmen.
