Wooing Auntie: Flextech appears to have a clear edge over BSkyB in the competition to become the BBC's pay-TV partner. But who will ultimately wine the prize?

Article Abstract:

Flextech is in talks with the BBC about the formation of a joint venture to launch several new pay-TV channels, and BSkyB is also talking with the BBC about funding its pay-TV expansion. Any deal would give the companies rights to high quality original UK programming. BSkyB is the dominant pay-TV player and would be expected to have the edge, although Flextech's parent TCI is a major US cable operator, which would enable the BBC to secure distribution in this lucrative market.

Cable players in key digital offer

Article Abstract:

Cable TV operators in the UK believe they can help to speed up implementation of digital TV services. Dennis Garrison, group programming director for Bell Cablemedia, a major operator, believes that digital broadcasters could minimise losses whilst operating digital channels for a small number of UK homes initially, if they linked with cable operators.
