Efficiency of educational production: an analysis of New York school districts

Article Abstract:

John Ruggiero's public sector Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model of technical efficiency was used to measure technical inefficiency when environment variables that cannot be modified by the decision-making unit affect the transformation of direct outputs into results. The DEA method could be an unreliable indicator of relative producer performance if Farrel efficiency does not match Koopmans efficiency because DEA cannot uncover key relationships existing between and among individual inputs and outputs.

Explaining interstate variation in income inequality

Article Abstract:

Interstate differentials in income distribution are examined via the Lorenz curve using data from Bishop, Formby, and Thistle's 1989 ordinal state rankings. Logit analysis reveals per capita educational spending, standard deviation of number of schooling years, mean family income, and property income are determinants of inequality. Further, states ranking higher than the US average for inequality typically had higher per capita educational expenditures.

Labor supply and investment in child quality: a study of Jewish and non-Jewish women: a comment

Article Abstract:

An analysis criticizing earlier research on Jewish women, their children's education and the labor supply is presented. Contrary to earlier findings, analysis shows that Jewish women are not more deterred from joining the workforce compared to their counterparts. The hypotheses that Jewish mothers refrain from working to invest time for their children is not supported by current data on key child status and education variables.
