Surveying the East

Article Abstract:

The move by Poland and Czechoslovakia towards a free-market economy has opened up opportunities for Western firms. During 1992, British quantity surveyor Gleeds has set up offices in Prague, Czechoslovakia, and Warsaw, Poland. Gleeds is working there for both Western and local clients. Gleeds partner Ray Tanner says that the firm is already making money in Eastern Europe and is unlikely to withdraw from the region. Tanner believes that British developers are too cautious about investing in the region, while Austrian, German and French companies are willing to take a chance.

Two new techniques for user training at the shop-floor level are described. Simulation gaming and iconographic manuals are found to facilitate high-end technology production even with low levels of user education. Gaming is specially fit for training people in using a physicaldevice. It can also be used to train materials planners on the concepts of material requirements planning.
