" A seam in our force-protection armor": Coast Guard port-security mission assumes new urgency

The terrorist attack against the USS Cole in Aden in Oct 2000 has heightened concern about port security. The Coast Guard's port security operations are described.

Staying ready "all of the time:" the U.S. Coast Guard: still semper paratus?

Article Abstract:

The Coast Guard has been underfunded for several years, and this has hampered the agency's ability to improve its fleet and meet the increased demand for its services. In federal budget discussions for FY 2002, the Coast Guard received authorization for $5.35 billion, more than Pres Bush requested. The way in which the funds will be budgeted is examined.

Spearheading joint transformation - and supporting homeland defense

Article Abstract:

The 9-11-01 terrorist attacks on the United States ushered in an entirely different type of threat against the country. The armed forces will obviously be a key element in responding to the terrorist threat, and the Jont Forces Command is developing new, unified military concepts.
