Advances in passive expendable countermeasures

Article Abstract:

Recent advances in passive expendable countermeasures have further boosted their reputation as the least expensive, most cost-effective resistance systems to radar-directed and infrared (IR) heat-seeking threats. These products, which primarily encompass chaff and flares, continue to be the most prevalently-depoyed form of countermeasure on military aircraft, as well as sea vessels and land-based military vehicles. Among the most notable improvements in the field are advanced flares, which pertain to the category of IR decoy flares configured to oppose the point-source-rejection strategies used in second- and third-generation IR heat-seeking missiles; various new techniques against IR-homing in anti-ship missiles; and enhancements in manufacturing techniques or performance of flares.
