Reinventing fixed-wing CAS

Article Abstract:

The existing strategy for fixed wing close air support (CAS) within the Marine Corps is close to becoming obsolete and is leading to a dangerously widening gap for the US Armed Forces in CAS employment on the battlefield. The NATO air operations in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, in 1999, have validated the use of joint direct attack munitions (JDAMs), where off-the-shelf technology is used to convert dumb bombs into global positioning system- guided munitions. JDAMs negate the need for having planes overfly targets to deliver CAS for manuever forces in a high threat environment. JDAM technology thus makes for safer, more accurate but cheaper CAS.
