Algerian special forces go on offensive

Article Abstract:

The armed forces of Algeria have adopted a search-and-destroy policy against the two largest rebel groups in the country. The Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat is thought to have several hundred members, while the Armed Islamic Group is believed to have some 1,500 active guerrillas.

Algerian rebels negotiate amnesty

Article Abstract:

The Algerian Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (Groupe Salafiste pour la Predication et le Combat - GSPC) are negotiating with authorities to surrender in exchange for an amnesty. This amnesty, if successful, will mark a major step towards ending the country's 12-year-old civil war.

Algeria's civil war flares up again

Article Abstract:

Algeria is again experiencing political unrest and terrorist bombings, with some 2,300 people killed in 2001. The Islamic extremist groups behind the attacks are headed by two men who are former associates of Osama bin Laden.
