Article Abstract:

Australia has disclosed that from March 2005 onwards it will be claiming 1,000 nautical mile (nm) maritime security zones from its shores, which has upset its neighbors amid concerns violating their sovereignty and breaching international law. The situation has led Canberra to strengthen its ability to protect the Australian coastline and maritime space due to its ability of innovative technologies that might be able to deliver relatively low-cost, flexible, and efficient surveillance over wide areas.
