NSWC outlines future battle replenishment concept

Article Abstract:

The Naval Surface Warfare Center's Underway Replenishment Dept has outlined a concept for a new Battle Group Support Ship (BGSS). The proposed BGSS will be 1,000-ft long, has a 65,000-ton displacement and capable of speeds of over 30 knots. It will also require less personnel and is designed to provide a wider range of underway logistics functions aside from fuel, ammunition and stores replinishment and warship equipment maintenance.

DD 21 teams show rival designs

Article Abstract:

Rival industry teams competing for the role of Full Service Contractor for the US Navy's projected DD21 Zumwalt-class multimission destroyer have given new details of their respective design concepts. The competing DD21 Blue Team led by General Dynamics' Bath Iron Works with Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics Surveillance Systems and DD 21 Gold Team led by Northrop Grumman's Litton Shipbuilding with Raytheon and Boeing have been working under Phase II initial system design contracts. The two teams revealed generally similar hullform and integrated topside configurations, but they have different approaches to propulsors, weapon system, installations and aviation facilities.

BAE systems shipyard chief warns over UK industrial capability

Article Abstract:

The head of BAE systems, United Kingdom's (UK) largest warship-builder, has warned that continued competition for warship orders, along with a lack of long-term coherency in the Ministry of DefenseEs (MoD's) equipment program, could threaten the future of the UK's naval industrial base. The affordability of the projected shipbuilding program in the UK is discussed.
