Balkan states struggle to reduce illicit weapons ownership

Article Abstract:

A pressing task in the Balkans is reducing the illegally held stockpiles of small-arms and light weapons, which is the result of a combination of weak state controls, unresolved border issues, and organized criminal and insurgent activity. Although Balkan countries are adopting European Union (EU)-standard legislations and regulations to safeguard against illegal weapons trafficking, lack of co-operation and mistrust among law enforcement agencies in the region is hampering the effort.

Orchestrated attacks indicate frustration over Kosovo future

Article Abstract:

The province wide orchestration designed to drive Serbs from their communities, the presence of non-local insurgents, and an increase in violence directed at officers of the international community suggest potential for future violent outbreaks in Kosovo. However, the ways in which ethnic violence could fuel extreme nationalism on both the Albanian and Serbian sides is examined.
