Southeast Asia: Drive to reduce terrorism in the tri-border area

Article Abstract:

The remote tri-border region where Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines meet at the juncture of the Celebes and Sulu seas has for centuries been noted for lawlessness though there is no evidence that the region is either a source or arena for significant transnational jihadist terrorism. The US military presence active in the Sulu archipelago is grouped under the Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines (JSOTF-P), which conducts civic action programs and provides intelligence and medical support for the Philippines armed forces.

South America's regional center for illegal activities

Article Abstract:

The tri-border area where Brazil, Argentine and Paraguay meet has for long been a center for illegal activities such as drugs and arms smuggling, money laundering and selling of counterfeit goods owing to lax border controls and differentiated tax, customs and police systems. The security forces of the three neighboring countries appear unwilling to institutionalize operative links while corruption remains a major hindrance to any sustained efforts to clamp down on illegal trade.
