Cutting through the fog of war: Armed forces strive to reduce fratricide threat

Article Abstract:

Co-operative battlefield combat identification systems are viewed as a key component in cutting down casualties or fratricide, the biggest killer of coalition troops in recent high-intensity operations. Several technologies solutions are proposed and nations transforming their forces to implement newly assumed commitments within coalitions operations are urgently awaiting guidance from the US on which system to employ.

The primary aim of convoy protection is immediate defense, which is complicated by factors like the duration of the mission, the terrain traversed, and operational circumstances. The resources being devoted to counter the problem include the use of sophisticated technology to assess the threat and co-ordinate communications.
